AFDA Graduation Films are 10-12 Minutes long and are shot over a period of
5 days.
The film is about two friends, who are on a night out. Their goal is to authentically express themselves as young adults, in a society that is subjugated. Mykel and Letsego are long time friends, who have found commonality in a subculture; punk.
After they leave a concert, they run into an intoxicated woman, who is locked out of a house. While the main character Mykel wants to help, Letsego is conflicted because of his internal biases against himself; not wanting to make the situation worse by making the woman feel uncomfortable and the judgment he might receive if anyone sees him with her at 2am; being that he is a black man and society's perception/assumptions about black people.
The film is built up by three themes, internal Racism, implicit bias & self oppression. These themes work hand-in-hand through the context of the story when broken down, especially because the story is based on a true story. The Director adapted this story from a similar real life experience and the unspoken racism and Bias a contemporary South Africa still deals with.
